Advent: Preparing Our Hearts for Christ's Coming

Advent is a season of waiting, watching, and preparing. Learn how to make the most of this holy season and prepare properly for Christmas.

By CandleFaith Team

Advent comes from the Latin word "adventus," meaning "coming." This season invites us to prepare for Christ's coming.

When is Advent?

Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve. It is a season of about four weeks.

The Four Weeks of Advent

Week 1: Watchfulness - Being awake and alert for Christ's coming. We remember that He will return at an hour we don't expect.

Week 2: Preparation - We prepare the way of the Lord, making straight His paths. This calls for repentance and renewal.

Week 3: Joy - As we draw closer to Christmas, our joy increases. We celebrate that salvation is near.

Week 4: Peace - We focus on the peace that Christ brings. He is the Prince of Peace who reconciles us to God.

How to Observe Advent

Prayer - Pray daily, perhaps using an Advent wreath - Read the daily Mass readings - Consider a nightly examination of conscience

Penance Advent is a penitential season (like Lent): - Abstain from meat on Fridays - Consider fasting or giving up something - Perform works of mercy - Make time for confession

Preparation - Clean your home for Christmas - Plan meaningful family traditions - Shop for the poor (Angel Tree, Giving Trees)

The Advent Wreath

The Advent wreath is a beautiful tradition:

  • Candle 1 (Purple): Prophecy and hope
  • Candle 2 (Purple): John the Baptist's call to repentance
  • Candle 3 (Rose/Pink): Joy in the approaching celebration
  • Candle 4 (Purple): The Annunciation to Mary
  • Center Candle (White): Christ, the Light of the World
