How to Make a Good Confession: A Step-by-Step Guide

The Sacrament of Reconciliation can feel daunting. Learn how to prepare and make a good confession that brings true peace and spiritual renewal.

For many Catholics, going to Confession can feel uncomfortable or even frightening. But the saints tell us differently. Saint John Vianney called confession "the most pleasing sacrifice we can offer to God" and said that "a great sin is nothing in comparison to a great mercy."

Why Confession Matters

Confession is one of the seven sacraments instituted by Christ. Through it, we receive:

  • Forgiveness of sins committed after Baptism
  • Restoration of our relationship with God
  • Grace to help us avoid future sin
  • Peace of mind and conscience

Before You Go: Examination of Conscience

Take time before confession to examine your conscience:

The Ten Commandments:

  1. 1Have I put anything before God? (idols, material possessions, status)
  2. 2Have I used God's name in vain?
  3. 3Have I kept holy the Lord's Day?
  4. 4Have I honored my parents and those in authority?
  5. 5Have I caused harm to life (abortion, violence)?
  6. 6Have I lived chastely? Have I been faithful in marriage?
  7. 7Have I stolen, cheated, or been unjust?
  8. 8Have I told the truth? Have I gossiped?
  9. 9Have I desired what belongs to others?
  10. 10Have I been envious or resentful?

How to Confess

When you enter the confessional:

  1. 1Begin with a greeting or sign of peace
  2. 2Say when you last received Confession
  3. 3Confess your sins - Be specific: name the sin, how many times, any circumstances
  4. 4Listen to the priest's advice and penance
  5. 5Say the Act of Contrition
  6. 6Receive absolution

The Act of Contrition

"My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against You whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with Your help, to sin no more and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In His name, my God, have mercy."

After Confession

  1. 1Complete your penance promptly
  2. 2Give thanks for God's forgiveness
  3. 3Resolve to avoid the sins you confessed
  4. 4Pray for strength to stay away from sin

Remember: God is always waiting to forgive you. He loves you more than you can imagine.
