The Importance of the Eucharist: Source and Summit of Our Faith

The Eucharist is the center of Catholic life. Discover why receiving Holy Communion is the most important thing we do as Catholics.

"I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."

— John 6:51

The Eucharist is the "source and summit of the Christian life" (Lumen Gentium, 11).

What is the Eucharist?

The Eucharist is the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present under the appearance of bread and wine. At Mass, through the words of consecration spoken by the priest, bread becomes Christ's body and wine becomes Christ's blood.

This is not symbolism—it's reality.

The Mass: A Sacrifice

The Mass is not merely a meal—it's the sacrifice of Christ on Calvary made present. At every Mass, the same Christ who died on the cross offers Himself to the Father.

Benefits of Receiving Communion

When we worthily receive the Eucharist:

  • We are united more closely to Christ
  • We receive grace to live holy lives
  • Our sins are forgiven
  • We are sealed for eternal life
  • We grow in charity with our neighbors

How to Prepare

  1. 1Be in a state of grace — Free from mortal sin
  2. 2Observe the fast — One hour before Communion
  3. 3Believe in the Real Presence — Faith in Christ's presence
  4. 4Have the right intention — Desire to grow in union with Christ

Visiting Jesus in the Tabernacle

Outside of Mass, Jesus remains in the tabernacle. Spending time in Eucharistic adoration is a beautiful way to deepen your love for Christ, grow in virtue, and find peace.

The Eucharist is the greatest treasure of the Catholic Church. It is Jesus Himself, given to us for our salvation.
