"Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord."

— James 5:14

Prayer and Healing

God cares about every aspect of our lives, including our physical health. While He doesn't always choose to heal us physically, He always wants to heal us spiritually.

A Prayer for Healing

"Loving Father, I come to you in prayer, laying my burdens at your feet. You are the source of all life and health. I ask you to touch my body with your healing grace.

If it is your will, take away my illness or injury. Grant me patience in suffering and peace in my heart.

Help me to remember that your love is closer than any pain I feel. May I trust in your plan for my life, knowing that you work all things for the good of those who love you.

Lord Jesus, you healed the sick and forgave sins—touch me now with your merciful hands. I believe in your power to heal.

Mary, Mother of Sorrows, intercede for me. Saint Luke, patron of physicians, pray for us. Amen."

Scripture Verses for Healing

  • "Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are my praise" (Jeremiah 17:14)
  • "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed" (James 5:16)
  • "But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds" (Jeremiah 30:17)
  • "The prayer of faith will save the sick" (James 5:15)

Trusting God's Will

Sometimes God chooses not to heal us physically. This doesn't mean He doesn't love us or that our prayers aren't being answered. It means:

  • He has a plan that we don't understand
  • Our suffering has meaning and can bring redemption
  • He offers spiritual healing that lasts forever
  • He will heal us perfectly in heaven

The Sacrament of Anointing

The Catholic Church teaches that the Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament instituted by Christ for those who are seriously ill. Through it, the sick receive:

  • Spiritual strength and peace
  • Forgiveness of sins
  • Sometimes physical healing
  • Grace to bear their suffering

If you or a loved one is seriously ill, speak to a priest about receiving this sacrament.
