The Seven Holy Sacraments Explained

The sacraments are the means by which God's grace flows into our lives. Learn about each of the seven sacraments and their significance.

The Catholic Church celebrates seven sacraments—visible signs instituted by Christ to give us grace. Each touches a different stage of our spiritual journey.

What is a Sacrament?

A sacrament is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give us grace. The Church teaches that sacraments work ex opere operato ("by the very fact of the action's being performed"), meaning that the grace is conveyed through the ritual itself.

The Seven Sacraments

1. Baptism (Initiation)

Baptism is the gateway to Christian life. Through water and the invocation of the Holy Trinity, we are cleansed of original sin, become children of God, and are incorporated into the Church.

2. Confirmation (Initiation)

Confirmation completes Baptism. We receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit and are strengthened to live as witnesses to Christ.

3. Eucharist (Initiation)

The Eucharist is "the source and summit of the Christian life." We receive the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ.

4. Reconciliation (Healing)

This sacrament reconciles us with God and the Church when we have committed mortal sins after Baptism.

5. Anointing of the Sick (Healing)

This sacrament brings spiritual and physical healing to those who are seriously ill or preparing for surgery.

6. Holy Orders (Vocation)

Through Holy Orders, men are ordained as bishops, priests, or deacons to serve God's people.

7. Matrimony (Vocation)

Matrimony is the sacred union of a man and a woman, reflecting Christ's love for the Church.

Why All Seven Matter

Each sacrament meets us where we are in life. Whether we're being born into the faith, growing in Christ, healing from sin, or serving the Church and family, Christ gives us the grace we need.
