St. Francis of Assisi, born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, was an Italian Catholic friar who founded the Franciscan Orders. He is one of the most venerated religious figures in Christianity. After a privileged youth, he renounced his wealth for a life of poverty and service to God. His deep love for God's creation, especially animals and nature, has made him a symbol of Christian stewardship of the environment.
